Jesus “Chuy” Sanchez Jr. (b. Hammond, Indiana) is a traditional artist based in Indianapolis. His work blends the sacred with the everyday, drawing inspiration from religion, folklore, family photos, and popular culture.
Chuy studied oil painting at the Academy of Art in Chicago and worked professionally in advertising as an art director and concept artist. Today, he primarily works in oil, acrylics, and gouache—often modifying his acrylics with thick mediums and non-toxic solvents to emulate the richness of oil paint. His art explores themes of identity, belonging, and memory, reflecting both his personal history and dreams while inviting viewers to connect with their own stories.
His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at City Natives Gallery (Murphy Arts Center), the Marilyn Rose Art Center, and the Yellow Gallery at the Indianapolis Public Library, as well as group exhibitions including Amorous Art at Irvington Lodge Gallery and Murphy Arts Center, COSAS BONITAS at the Marilyn Rose Center, and TINY at Gallery 429.
Beyond the studio, Chuy is a husband, father, son and military veteran whose life experiences continue to shape the imagery and narratives within his work.
